What To Expect

  • Dermal fillers are a form of treatment that is particularly effective for improving facial irregularities. The most commonly used fillers are based on hyaluronic acid – which is produced naturally by the body and is found in particular in the skin. Injectable fillers can reduce or eliminate wrinkles and scars, create fuller lips, and treat lipoatrophy, or fat loss beneath the skin. Injectable fillers offer a safe, and effective method of giving your skin a more youthful appearance. This treatment is suitable for individuals looking to enhance facial features or reduce signs of aging without surgery. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy/ Breast feeding, or skin infections.

    Types of hyaluronic acid fillers

While there are a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers, some of the most common are Restylane®, Juvederm® and Revanesse®. Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally biocompatible, which means allergy skin testing is not required prior to treatment.

    • Avoid Blood Thinners: In the week leading up to the procedure, avoid taking blood-thinning medications or supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil, as these can increase the risk of bruising.

    • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, as this can enhance the effects of hyaluronic acid-based fillers.

    • Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.

    • Avoid Touching the Area: Refrain from touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent filler displacement.

    • Ice Application: Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and bruising, but avoid placing ice directly on the skin.

    • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Steer clear of intense exercise, heavy lifting, or any activity that increases blood flow to the face for 24-48 hours.

    • Avoid Heat and Sun: Keep away from direct sunlight, saunas, or tanning beds for a few days, as excessive heat can increase swelling.

    • Swelling: Mild swelling at the injection site is common and typically resolves within a few days.

    • Bruising: Small bruises can occur where the filler is injected but usually fade within a week.

    • Redness: Temporary redness in the treated area may occur but subsides quickly.

    • Tenderness: Some tenderness or sensitivity in the treated area may be felt for a few days post-treatment.

    • Lumps or Bumps: In rare cases, small lumps or bumps may appear under the skin, which can be gently massaged or will settle over time.
